Tijuana

Review : Tijuana is a border town that caters to American citizens. Right next to the border there are tiny little shops that resemble flea markets. There are many small businesses serving cheap food, drinks, alcohol, pharmacy drugs, and more.

One of the main attractions of Tijuana is the Revolucion area. You will know you are there if you are on the same street as the large metal arch (which is visible from miles away.)

One must visit this border town once to truly experience it. Tijuana is a poor city and it is a little dirty but there is definitely a lot of culture. The people there really want your business and they may approach you trying to sell their goods. Bring a friend or two along to Tijuana and be sure to look after each other.

How to Get To Tijuana

There are many ways to get to Tijuana. You can take the San Diego trolley all the way down to the border. Once you reach the border you can simply walk across freely. People walk across the border to Mexico all of the time so you can just follow everyone else. There will be several one way gates you will have to walk through.

Another way to get to Tijuana is to drive to the border using the I-5 or I-805, and then park at the very last United States exit. You will see signs on the road that will tell you the last exit is coming. Once you exit there will be several parking areas that will cost around $7 to $10. Watch out for the exit signs because if you drive into Mexico it will take you an hour or two to get back. It takes a long time because the border patrol searches every car wishing to cross into the United States.

(Editor's note: Some friends of mine took two cars to Mexico. One car parked at the last exit and the other accidentally crossed the border. It took about two hours for them to get back into the United States.)

Okay, so you've crossed the border and set foot into Mexico. Now what? In Tijuana there is a huge metal arch that resembles the St. Louis arch. Just use your eyes and walk towards the arch. You will begin to see small shops and restaurants everywhere. It takes about 45 min to walk from where you crossed the border to the arch. The arch is where Revolucion is and this is where all of the larger clubs and restaurants are.

Getting back into the United States is a little tricky if you walk. You have to return to where you crossed the border, but you have to cross a bridge to get on the other side of I-5. If you're tired walking back you can get a cheap taxi and they're available everywhere. Tell the taxi driver you want to get back to the U.S.A and he will know where to take you. You will have to walk through inspection and it helps to have a passport or a U.S. driver's license.

Enjoy the cheap food, beer, sights, and sounds!
